Surf Punk Kid Travels is Back!

11 Oct

Hey Dude!

surfpunkkid

Back in CA from my traveling

It’s the Surf Punk Kid back again, traveling man, of course.  I’m back, taking a rest from my hiking around the world and traveling.  I’m tired and burnt man, I feel like taking a break and updated my Surf Punk Kid Travel site.

I’ve been kicking back lately in Santa Monica, California, SA-MO to you’s that knows.  Just doing a bit of surfing, biking and hanging in Venice Beach, Muscle Beach, Santa Monica Beach and MaliBU.  Catching some waves, biking on my cool wheels, watching the babes and laying back.

I spent about three months in Central America, hitching rides and busing it from Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and then through to Mexico.  My skin got fried by the sun, I caught some waves, met some cool people, both Americans, Canadians, Europeans and the locals.  Worked on a farm in a couple of the countries and even managed a stint as a waiter at a resort.  Didn’t stay long in Mexico, what with all their drug lord wars happening, man, I just didn’t feel safe.  Headed back to the U.S. Of America pretty quick after Mexico.

Done some wild things in Costa Rica, including swinging from the trees in the rainforests – canopying they call it.  Did some fishing – like, often, both in the lakes and on the open sea.  Did some cool surfing while in Panama and in Nicaragua.  Met some families and stayed with them, sometimes earning my keep by contributing.  Spent some time, well, a lot of time in some hostels along with way.  Mostly, I stayed in hostels and sometimes found some as cheap as $5.00 a night.  Worked on an eco farm and learned how to farm, organically.

Got lost a few times along the way.  Watched some pretty mean sun sets and sunrises.  Hung out with the coolest of people.  Really great people.  Got sick a couple of times, probably because of some spoiled food.  Felt like I would die a couple of times but it passed man.

They mostly speak Spanish in Central America and I gotta tell you that I’m speaking Spanish like a local.

Gotta figure out what to do next and where I’ll travel, but for now, I’m just hanging back in SA-MO, enjoying the waves and feeling not too bad at all.  I’ll be updating my Surf Punk Kid site with all my travel stories.  Might just change my template to the site and it’ll all be different.  Travel tales to tell.  See ya around!

Getting Started with Your Vacation from the Internet

15 Aug

For most of us the very word ‘vacation’ is enough for our mind to conjure up positive images of a tropical rainforest or a white sandy beach or some historical monument or building. While most of us spend a lot of time dreaming about visiting various different travel destinations, we often tend to ignore one important aspect. Careful planning is something that should be your first priority whenever you are planning a vacation. With the advent of the internet this bit has become a lot simpler nowadays.
You should first of all remember that you can have just as much fun planning for your trip, as going on the trip itself. Whether it is researching about discount tickets on airlines or getting reservations in a luxury hotel or going through details about sight seeing attractions in a particular city, the internet has made travel that much more enjoyable. You can also think of involving the entire family in the planning of your vacation. Making decisions on what are the attractions that you all want to see or not see  can be done collectively, thanks to the internet.

One good way of getting to know about a certain hotel or a travel destination online is by registering yourself with a travel forum. You could always pose some questions about specific travel destinations on the forums. You can get great tips from others who have been toa particular destination. There are some minute details that one cannot find on promotional websites. For example, forums are the best places to find out current information about which hotels not to stay in. This kind of information will not be usually available on the general websites which promote particular travel destinations. While searching for information on the forums, you should be careful enough not to divulge too much of information about you or your travel plans.

It makes economic sense to plan your trip well in advance. These days most of the hotels and travel agencies give discounts for those who book their hotel rooms and travel packages in advance. A simple online search is all that you need to do in order to find out about the latest offers from the hotels or travel agencies. You can also visit the websites of leading airline carriers and find out when when they offer the maximum discounts. Many of the airline carriers are also known to offer discounts in combination with accommodation these days. Such combo packages could come in handy, especially if you are traveling as a family and want to save some money.

While the internet has made planning a vacation a lot easier, you should also make it a point to leave part of your travel experience to spontaneity. You could, for example, leave some extra time in your plan for doing certain things that cannot always be planned. These could include a relaxing picnic or an extended stroll on the beach. You also never know, particularly when you are driving, as to some off the road attractions that you might want to stop and enjoy. So, while planning is important, going overboard is not something that is recommended.
